Oyster or Pebble? A Parable
Which one are you?
“A natural pearl (often called an Oriental pearl) forms when an irritant works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating is deposited on the irritant until a lustrous pearl is formed.”(See J Thomas Jewelers — not an affiliate link)
If the pebble could talk, what would it say? “No fair, no fun, I can’t, you can’t make me, it’s your fault, life sucks,“ and all the variations of the same, no doubt.
The oyster meanwhile quietly deals with the irritant, making it beautiful and valuable. It never argues, doesn’t reject the irritant, it just does the job.
What do we learn from the oyster?
